Webmaster Glossary
Below is a non-exhaustive list of terms and definitions that are common to the webmaster world.
Address Bar
The area within a web browser where a user can input a URL or web site address. In a phrase: I wanted to visit babywebmaster.com so I typed in http://www.babywebmaster.com in Internet Explorer’s address bar.
Apache
Apache HTTP Server, more commonly known as Apache, is a freely available web server software. 60% of all Web sites on the Internet are using Apache. In a phrase: I wanted to make my computer behave like a web server so I downloaded and installed Apache.
Bandwidth
A way for measuring the amount of traffic or data used on a server, measured in bytes. In a phrase: I had a lot of visitors to my site, it used up 5GB of bandwidth last month.
cPanel
cPanel is a Linux based web hosting control panel that provides a graphical interface and automation tools designed to simplify the process of hosting or managing a web site. More simply, a control panel for your web server. In a phrase: I wanted to add another FTP account and create an email account, so I logged into Cpanel, which came free with my hosting plan.
CSS
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is used to “style” HTML elements on a webpage. In a phrase: I wanted to change the background color of my website so I edited my website’s css file.
Database
A database is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes. In a phrase: When I login to my Hotmail account, the password I input is cross-referenced with data stored in a database before granting me access to my email.
